Spray Tan At Home And Beat The Burn

Remember when going to the beach meant piling on the suntan lotion, baking in the scorching sun for hours, and then hoping for that glamorous, golden tan the advertisements promised? Usually the result was painful sunburn. In reality, direct sun can seriously damage the epidermis, and staying in the shade seems to be the best and safest course of action. But this need not mean staying pale forever. Today you can spray tan at home, away from the sun.

Some people are dubious about the wisdom of applying chemicals in order to get the same look as real sun exposure. Spray tanning works by applying a thin, even coat of solution with an airbrush, or directly spraying on the skin from a pressurized can. The chemicals they contain are not really dyes, but work by reaction. When sprayed on, they interact with naturally present amino acids. This causes a darkening effect just like sun exposure, but without the harmful ultraviolet rays. The two most commonly used chemicals are dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose. Both are considered safe.

Non-spray darkening methods include products that are taken internally, or hormones that are implanted. There are also temporary bronzers, which can be washed off after a day. These methods are not as popular or effective as the spray-on booth or airbrush tan, which got started in salons and has grown in popularity. But, like any salon treatment, there is a significant cost, and many opt for a less expensive home treatment. It is possible to buy airbrush kits for home use alone, or with the help of a friend. And, if being the correct shade of golden brown is imperative, the serious tanner can purchase salon-style equipment for home use, including air compressors, brushes, nozzles, and related paraphernalia. This still costs less than buying a tanning bed, and is far less damaging.

Many people, however, opt for a less costly spray system designed for in-home use. These tans will last about five to seven days before they begin to fade, and can be extended almost indefinitely by reapplications, if the user so desires. Differing formulas will produce varying shades of color, and should be chosen based on type. Honestly evaluate your own skin before choosing a product. A very light-toned person may be attracted by an advertisement promising a 'deep, golden tan.' Unfortunately, this may not be the best look unless you like the color orange. The very pale should opt for a product that will gradually build toward a golden color, and is easily controlled.

Also, no two bodies are alike. If a friend looks absolutely terrific after using a particular home spray-on tanning product, don't assume you will get exactly the same end result. Skin conditions can change with the years and even with the season. A product that worked for you in the past may be less effective as time goes by. Do your own product research before you buy.

When you have decided on a product, preparation is essential prior to applying the solution, whether is is to be airbrushed on, or sprayed from a can. Be sure and read the directions carefully to avoid any mistakes. Inviting a friend to help is probably a good idea, because manually spraying those hard-to-reach areas like your back, for instance, can be difficult. There can still be some streaking or uneven color. Most of these products recommend application at night to allow maximum drying time. Then, in the morning any color looking uneven can be given a touch-up.

Good preparation is essential. Exfoliation, or removal of the outer layer of dead skin cells, is very important. The chemicals in tanning solutions actually affect only these outer cells. If not given a fresh start by exfoliating, the tan will fade more quickly, and will need to be reapplied. Don't wear any kind of makeup or deodorant that covers up the pores, because it will also block the effects of the spray.

Tanning at home can look almost as good as an expensive salon visit or spray tanning booth treatment. Spray tan at home and avoid the extra visit and cost of a salon. If you want to stay tan and fit-looking all year round, investing in the necessary home equipment may be a great decision. Apply the color, and avoid the sun for a good look.
